    The expenses of World War I were so great that the Commonwealth Government introduced three new taxes in 1917: an entertainment tax, a wartime profits tax and a bachelor tax that raised such a bitter protest that it was never put into operation.

Higher education loan program (HELP)

The Australian Government contributes towards the education of eligible students by funding government-supported places at universities. Eligible students may be able to study now and pay later by using a HELP loan to pay their student contribution.
